Solar Rebate Offer

Power up with Solar

Want to help the environment but don’t know where to start? Why not take advantage of the federal government’s solar power rebate and install solar panels on your roof?

The Council’s ‘Power Up With Solar’ program, in partnership with Eco-Kinetics, offers up to 200 Hobsons Bay homeowners the opportunity to purchase a one kilowatt solar panel system to produce emissions free renewable electricity for your home.

Households earning under $100,000 per annum are eligible for the federal government’s solar power rebate of $8,000. This means that residents can install solar panels from $1,760.

If you have a northerly roof aspect, a roof area of 8m² and minimal shading, simply contact Eco-Kinetics at eambrus@eco-kinetics.com to book an inspection or phone 9708 6714.

If you want to find out more about ‘Power Up with Solar’, the Council is holding a community information session on Wednesday, 15th April from 6.00pm to 7.30pm at Hobsons Bay Civic Centre, 115 Civic Parade, Altona.

Opening

Art in Public Places is a project coordinated by Hobsons Bay City Council that is held in conjunction with Bayside and Williamstown festivals as a municipal wide event that exhibits the artwork of western region artists in businesses and various venues across Hobsons Bay.

Now in its fifth year, Art in Public Places program has continuously grown.

Participation in Art in Public Places is an effective way to promote businesses and artists in Hobsons Bay due to the various marketing and media attention surrounding the project, thrusting participating businesses into the public eye. The project is a community building project that enables stronger partnerships between artists and businesses in the local community.

Expressions of interest are open for artists that reside in the western suburbs of Melbourne, under 3 categories; Artists in Businesses (visual artists exhibiting in businesses), Galleries and cultural venues in Hobsons Bay and Independent Events.

Art in Public Places

Public Toilet Replacement - Logan Reserve, Altona.

Works to replace the existing public toilet block in Logan Reserve in Altona will commence during the week starting Monday 16th March 2009.

The works will involve the demolition of the existing public toilet block and the construction of a new facility in relatively the same location. The new public toilet will contain two unisex self-contained units, which are more accessible and safer for users.

The façade of the toilet will be made out of the same type of timber as the new fence on the southern boundary of Logan Reserve. A new path will be constructed to the toilet from Sargood Street and some minor low level landscaping will be undertaken to the area in front of the toilet. The toilet is expected to be a much improved facility and an attractive addition to Logan Reserve.

Works are expected to take approximately five weeks to complete.

A sign will be placed on the site advising people where the nearest alternative public toilet is located. Alternative public toilets are located at:

  • Weaver Reserve, adjacent to the Life Saving Club
  • The Life Saving Club Tower, on the foreshore side of the Esplanade, east of the pier
  • Altona Library
  • Coles car park, to the rear of the Altona Library

Please contact 9932 1000 if you like further information about this project.

Pier Street Improvement Works

The Council will begin works to improve the northern end of Pier Street between Civic Parade and Railway Street North at the beginning of March 2009.

Traffic calming

The improvements will visually connect the northern and southern ends of the street, as well as calm traffic and enhance facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Improvements include:

· Wider footpaths and a new crossing

· Approximately 30 new trees

· Landscaped gateway at the corner of Civic Parade and Pier Street.

There will be some footpaths closures but the Council will keep disruptions to a minimum during the works, which are due to be completed at the end of May,

Residents' feedback

Residents were given the opportunity to comment on the plans and their feedback has been incorporated into the final designs.

The Council allocated $550,000 in its 2008/2009 Capital Works Budget to complete the streetscape works. The state government also contributed $40,000 towards the works from the Creating Better Places Program.
