Visit Altona

Westgate Bridge
Altona holds a unique position in Melbourne.

It is one of only a handful of suburbs with complete bay-side living, complete with swimable beaches. The natural environment of the Altona beach means that not only is it perfect for families due to a shallow beach area, but also an area that is protected within its own bay (Altona Bay).

The area is popular for fishing and boating, as well as wildlife watching, in particular the migratory birds that travel from around the globe seasonally.

At the heart of Altona is a traditional shopping strip, with plenty of parking, a wide mixture of shops and businesses, as well as cafes and restaurants.

Altona is rich in arts and community events, with facilities and sporting venues that are the envy of other areas.

The Altona Village Traders Association has taken on the responsibility of promoting all that Altona has to offer, in doing so showcasing the traders that make up the community, encouraging investment and visitors, as well as providing a forum for such.

Please look over our web site. If you have any questions, or would like to become a member of the Association, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Charlie Sutton

Charlie's fearless dash put most opposition sides on the back foot.

Charlie was appointed captain-coach of the Footscray Football Club  in 1951 where  he took the team to a finals appearance in his first year.

By 1954 Sutton coached the Bulldogs to their first and only Premiership.

Charlie continued as captain- coach for one more year, retiring as a player to continue coaching which he did until mid way through the 1957 season, being replaced by Ted Whitten.

Charlie continued working with his club, again taking up the coaching role in 67-68.

Ted's enourmous contribution to the Bulldogs is remembered in the naming of the Bulldog's Best and Fairest award; The Charlie Sutton Medal. Charlie has also been inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 1996.

Charlie and his wife Lorna still reside in Altona.

Alex Jesaulenko - You Beauty!
Famous 1970 mark Jezza footy card
Alex Jesaulenko was a footballing genius, who defenitly ranks as one of the best.

Born in Salzburg , Austria , Jezza came to Australia as a young boy and did not play Australian rules until the age of 14. Jezza initially grew up in Canberra, where he lived with his parents, later moving to Melbourne and living in Altona. He joined Carlton at the age of 22, and his brilliant ball winning ability soon made him a star.

Jezza started at centre half- forward and then full-forward which saw him kick 115 goals in 1970.(the first Blue to top a 100 goals). After suffering back problems he was forced to play as a half back flanker and as expected succeeded as always.

Jezza played in four flags with Carlton and was the last man to captain/coach a side to a premiership. After 13 seasons with Carlton Jezza went over to St Kilda and with only two weeks into the season was appointed coach. It had seemed Jesaulenko had drifted out of the game for a while but in 1989 Carlton recalled him as a coach. Among his many honours he represented Victoria 15 times and was inducted into the AFL's Team of the Century and of course took the unforgettable mark of the century in the 1970 grand final sparking the now infamous catch cry - "oh Jesalulenko, You Beauty!"
